Are you taking care of yourself? Are you vibrant, energetic, and the healthiest person you can be? In spite of all the many demands on you each week, are you making sure that you are also taking care of you- the one taking care of so many others?

A Balanced Heart Is A Healthy Heart

The statistics say no.

  • More than half of all African American women over the age of 20 have hypertension.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of maternal mortality.
  • According to the AHA, just 7 percent of perimenopausal or menopausal women are exercising to goal, and more than ⅓ are obese.
  • And by the age of 65, nearly 3 in 4 women will have heart disease.

Choose Health. Choose Vitality. Choose How You Want to Live Your Life.

You may be wondering why you want to take care of your heart. It’s not just about health. It’s about you being able to choose who you want to be for the rest of your life. It’s about knowing that if you take care of yourself, you’ll be able to do whatever it is that you want to do for as long as you live.

We have long considered self-care to be things like massages, brunch with friends, downtime resting or reading a book. While all of these definitely are ways to care for yourself, to love yourself more, the most important thing you can do for yourself is take care of your heart.

HeartCare is the New SelfCare

I want you to be as healthy as you can – this is why we have been going through my series, 10 Steps to Heart Health.

So far on this journey I have introduced you to my friend Celebrity Entrepreneur and Best Selling Author Naomi Whittel as she begins her own heart health journey. She researches everything, even including herself in the experiment to figure out how to lead the healthiest life possible.

In Step 1 of the series we discussed how you can (and must) Live From the Heart.

In Step 2 of the series titles, Lace Up Your Sneakers And Move, we discussed one of my favorite things, exercise!

Get Moving

I believe exercise needs to become part of our lives. A habit, a ritual, a thing that we do. All of us schedule everything all day long. You must schedule exercise. You don’t put it at the bottom of the list. You don’t say, I don’t have time. You make the time. You always have to make the time. You are worth it.

Step 3 was all about nourishing your heart and body with foods that taste good and are good for you. If you missed it, you can read it here, Nourish Your Food And Your Heart

And last week, in Step 4, we discussed something very close to my heart and something we all deal with on a daily basis, Stress, Anxiety, Depression And Purpose. The past few years have been a really, really rough time. It’s been a time of stress in ways that we never even knew were possible. We all can deal with stress in like a day or a week or a month even, but years and years of chronic stress, it’s hard.

Meditating, finding times of stillness, of breath of peace every single day. We all need to figure out how to get through this and find healthier ways to cope.

Step 5. Alright, are you ready? Here’s the call to action. In this next session, we’re going to look at those relationships. Are they good? Are they bad?

We’re going to look at our jobs. Are they supporting us? Are they draining us? We’re going to look at all of these things and the pros and the cons and where we might want to shift, but just remember, in relationships, there are good days. They’re bad days.

The job one day might be stressful, but overall, it’s giving you all that you need. I’m going to ask you to evaluate, become a journalist of your own life. Wake up every day, take care of yourself, and then go out in the world and see what’s working for you and maybe what’s not.

In the next session, we’re going to ask you to make some choices. I want you to think about things, to maybe look at things differently. As we go through this session, I want you to figure out what works for you and what doesn’t.  Get ready to be our own journalist, and let’s take a look at the outside of us.
